I have lived by Molly Stark for over 35 years and have concerns over the Stark County Commissions new plans of tearing down the historical building and putting a recycling center in its place. They claim that there has been no interest in anyone buying the building ( which is a lie- there have been several interested parties looking to restore it's beauty and printed articles attesting to that fact, but the commissioners were not interested because they would not profit) I would also like to note that the alleged fires always seem to occur at their convenience. They were denied funding help for refurbishing on July 1 (Massillon Independent)and several days later a fire started making it easier for them to get approval for demolishing the building. I was at the other previous fire personally and witnessed some disturbing behaviors from our commissioners. On both occasions, the fires started with documents that were supposed to have been removed years ago by the county!
It was the most beautiful building and it should have been maintained or sold many years ago. There will be a community meeting on Tues. July 15 at 7:30 pm at the Fire Station in front of Molly Stark to find out what we need to do as a community to stop them from putting up a recycling center right next to a nursing home! As far as the ghost stories go, I have never seen any as a child or adult but have always heard stories of hauntings. Maybe TAPS should be called in to dispell the stories.

Molly Stark update: There was a tremendous turnout for the community discussion (80+ people) as well as Stark County commissioner, Todd Bosley. A volunteer committee was put together to research and present an alternative use for the property to be presented to the Commissioners. (We were told they would work with us in one breath and then in another breath we were told that the property will now be auctioned to the highest bidder and we are now at the mercy of the buyer) Agreement was reached that the building would need to be removed due to lack of mainenence and repair. There were several in the community with possible alternatives to a recycling center. Some of them discussed were a Park and/or senior housing (assisted living/park combo)- constructing a memory site with the history of Molly Stark on the property. Mr. Bosley said that there will NOT be a recycling center on that property due to the response. We have a long road ahead of us as we continue to find a suitable alternative and hope that this can be done before the county follows through with their 'threat' if we didn't want the recycling center. Hopefully the community will continue to come together to help with fund raisers, etc.

I am working on a project for my job to help determine the environmental problems that the Molly Stark Hospital in Canton currently has. I need to interview someone who worked there when it was a functioning hospital. No obligation or risk. Just a phone Q & A about the history of the hospital. If anyone worked there or knows someone who did, respond in this discussion.Go to Top of Page

Does anyone know where all the old records of patients went when they closed Molly Stark down? My friend's father was admitted with TB in the 50's and my friend would love to have some information about his dad's time there. I volunteered as a teenager and just love the facility...so sad it was left to deteriorate. Molly Stark Hospital was a jewel in our community.

Wow... such discussion... such stories. I live near Molly also and confess that I haven't thought much of it. My youth group went in a couple of times and helped to lead an afternoon worship service for the residents back in the 80s.

I do not have any "haunting stores" but do feel that there is a lot of "spirit" in Molly Stark... not the building, but the people that have lived and worked there... in their stories and lives that they have touched.

Even though the future of the building and the land has yet to be determined, how can we preserve all the stories and pictures? I’d be interested in discussing this with more of you who care about Molly Stark and the community it has served. (8/19/08)

J-Bird 13...
would be interested in seeing your pictures of Molly. Like I said, I worked at Molly for several years, and really would like to see them.
I hate to hear that she might be torn down... she is like an old friend, you might not see her often enough, but you know she is always there.
thanks in advance.... let me know if you have a website for the pictures.

Update on the Molly Stark.
Stark Parks , Nimishillen Township Trustees, and the community have put together a plan to create a passive recreational park on the Molly Stark property. This park would have walking trails and picnic areas so the beauty of the land would be preserved. As part of the plan, there is a desire to maintain and restore the historical Main entrance area as the information center and restroom facilities. We need the community support to help this happen. Stark Parks will be meeting with the Stark County Commissioners on Thursday, September 25 at 1:00pm in the First Merit Building (110 Central Plaza)room Suite 240 to present the plan. Anyone that can attend the meeting is welcome and encouraged. If you are in support of adding this property to the Stark Parks District, please let the Stark County Commissioners know you support this proposed plan.

Seadog-
You will want to contact the Stark County Commissioners for the records. At this time, they still have them and are soon to be removed and shredded (last I heard).

I got a postcard picture of the place from e-bay a month ago. My sisters have taken pics of it as we lived there from 1947-1957. E-mail me and I'll attach the current pictures in response. Harold Brueckner - haroldb@tstar.net
