All of the officials are saying this is their 'protocol' for handling suicidal people.
Unfortunately it is ILLEGAL! There have been PLENTY of laws found to be unconstitutional, just as their 'protocol' is.

The sheriff is now trying to say they don't make the call on who is "suicidal". That a outside contractor is. And the contractor, Correctional HealthCare Group, is spewing the same line, that it is their 'protocol'. Except that they don't seem to consider that the rules are illegal or that their people work closely with the police and could be, and probably are, in collusion with them.

I don't see a professional psychiatrist traumatizing a person they think might be suicidal by forceably stripping them naked with no explanation or dialog with them.

This has nothing to do with them thinking she was suicidal, it was almost CERTAINLY done to humiliate, embarrass, degrade and punish Hope Steffy.

And then there is all the DISPUTED stuff that we have.

That she was attacked by the deputy without just cause.(so he HAS to come up with a charge on her to cover his abuse)
That he pulled on her arm to get her ‘to react’ and then made it seem as if she was resisting.
Deputy and jailers claim that she was in mood swings, but NO VIDEO shows this.
That the deputy left her in the car, while he talked to someone at the jail.(This alone raises a red flag for me!!)
That she was told she could go home after questions.
That she was NEVER asked to remove her cloths.
That the officers attacked her without warning.
That her tooth & back were injured in the multiple attacks by police.

And then we have all the ‘missing’ video for icing on the cake……

This gets to stink more & more.

I just hope people get involved in this. How much can people see, before they react, and say enough is enough?

Cop testified that she disrespected him.

Cop testified that he "pushed her against his car". Witnesses say he flew into a rage and slammed her on the car. Steffy has a cracked tooth, which version seems more likely?

Cop testified that she 'resisted' arrest. Witnesses say he had her arm behind her and she was just trying to save her arm.

Cop testifies in court that he then grabbed her right arm and tripped her and swung her to the ground.
Witnesses say he body slammed her hard enough to cause her nose to bleed.

The cop had a body mic & remote for his video camera.

He testifies twice that he's out in the "middle of nowhere".
Then he says Steffy had an outburst.
Then he says she kept it up.
Then he says she 'poked' him.
Then he decides to make an arrest.
Then he testifies that he calls for backup in case people "don't like the way he is handling things".

But he NEVER turns on the camera. After he assaulted Hope and she's mad and cussing him, THEN he decides to turn it on.

THIS is what the jury sees.

How do you crack someone's tooth by pushing them against a car?

How do you have someone bleeding from their nose and give them a bulged disk in their back by swinging them down to the ground?

He says that he used all this force, because she was "resisting arrest".

Later in the trial he admits that Steffy slipped a hand out of her cuffs, but she TELLS him about it and never tries to escape! (Or resist without her arm being in a arm bar.)

Steffy also testified that her ears were ripped open by the police, when they removed her earrings.

Does this sound like people that are trying to "save your life"? Or that even care about what happens to you?

Didn't hear that on the news either huh?

The more you look at this case, the worse it gets!
And the grand jury found NO criminal actions by police!?!?!??! What a joke!!

I had contacted the sheriffs dept at the start of May and asked if that video would ever be released.
They said then, that it would be given to Steffeys lawyers. So they were NOT denying its existence THEN.
Maybe not everyone knew that its existence was supposed to be denied….OOPS!

Here’s just a couple things from the trial transcript.

In the CantonRep paper they wrote this:
QUOTE "When she pulled out her sister's ID, Gurlea turned his attention to Zorger, but Steffey interrupted them. That's when Gurlea arrested her for disorderly conduct, according to his report."

This is NOT what was said at trial.

On page 123 & 129 of the trial transcript Gurlea claims that Steffey "poked him in the chest" and THAT’S when he decided to make an arrest.
But the "poke" is disputed by witnesses.

Then Gurlea claims another reason to arrest Steffey was that he was afraid that the yelling would generate more calls to the sheriff's dept.
But at trial, (page 130), he says he's "out in the middle of nowhere". He AGAIN admits being "out in the middle of nowhere" in cross examination and states that the houses are hundred of yards apart and he never saw anyone come out of their house. (page 135).

Conflicting testimony?!?!? Yeah folks, we have plenty.

Then at the top of page 138, when asked if he knew Steffey had been “smacked against the car and that she fell to the ground” Gurlea says he was told by a witness, and I quote: "And when they went out, they found....they discovered this altercation occurring."
(A quick change from what he WAS going to say, and I suspect that he was going to say “they found, her laying on the ground unconscious”, but that would mean admitting that he KNEW she was indeed knocked unconscious and in need of medical attention.)
Steffey's lawyer asks straight-out if he knew she had been knocked out.
He replied "I don't know for a fact that she lost consciousness that night. This is the first I've heard about it."

Him & his backup “investigated” this and he hadn’t heard about her condition until this trial?!?!!?
See? Nothing the cops say makes sense, its all BS and lies.

The FBI is looking into it, but I'm not holding out for anything different.

Perhaps some locals can simply start training video cameras on these monsters every time they step into public. That will let them know that we will not tolerate any more of this abuse.

Ok heres a video you won't see on the news either. This is some of what I got from the BCI "investigation" that the state had.

Heres the cops taking Steffey to the cell to strip her naked.

The quality of the video is pretty bad. It will seem to 'skip' frames for quite a while in some places, but then take a bunch in a row at other times. Why it does this, I don't know.
All the cameras at the sheriff's dept seem to be in bad shape and "malfunction" right at critical moments.

I had to cut this video in half, it was 20 minutes long, from the time they took her in to the time they left the hall in front of her cell. So I cut off the front of it when they took her in.

WHY does it take 20 minutes outside the hall to show a "suicide prevention" that only took 4 min?

The building camera, seems to skip a lot of frames, so you'd think it would be a shorter video.

But as you can see after they have closed up the cell after assaulting her, they all stand around and have a good laugh, so this will add some more time to the video.

As you can see from the video the big dufass in the white shirt, he stays at the door to the cell looking in all the time Steffey was being assaulted, and then he stays back around her cell afterwards, looking in....GEE, I wonder WHY?
Then afterwards he's joined by another officer who didn't get a chance to help strip Steffey and he starts walking down to have a look too.

In 2007, the last year data was available, the Lucas County Corrections Center housed 26,597 adult inmates and experienced five serious suicide attempts, one inmate escape, 12 inmate-on-inmate assaults, and six inmate-on-staff assaults.

That same year, the numbers were much lower in the Montgomery County jail in Dayton, where 38,750 inmates were housed and there were no suicide attempts or assaults.

Much higher numbers were reported from the Stark County jail in Canton, where 11,761 inmates were housed and where there were 14 serious suicide attempts and 89 inmate-on-inmate assaults.

Looks like Stark County personnel could use some more training, and a new Sheriff.

But an appeal of that decision by the county and Sheriff Timothy Swanson means Valentina Dyshko’s case won’t go to trial next week as scheduled.

Dyshko, of Lake Township, filed her lawsuit last year.

In court papers, her attorneys say the jail employees violated Dyshko’s constitutional rights by communicating with her through an unqualified interpreter, and that the sheriff’s office has no policy on how to handle detainees or inmates who don’t speak English, which is contrary to national standards.

Further, Dyshko’s lawsuit says she missed three doses of medication for a serious blood disorder while in the jail, and that the ordeal caused her severe emotional distress and led to her being hospitalized.

The county argues that Dyshko’s rights weren’t violated and that the jail staff acted reasonably.

Neither David Malik, an attorney for Dyshko, nor James Climer, an attorney for the county and Swanson, would comment on the ruling.

The appeal to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals will take months to complete.

JAILED FOR A MISDEMEANOR

On March 10, 2006, Dyshko turned herself in on a misdemeanor warrant issued by Stark County Family Court. The charge, related to the home-schooling of her children, later was dismissed.

She speaks little to no English and sheriff’s deputies were unable to communicate with her. Unable to get a translator from a local Ukrainian church, the jail staff enlisted the help of a woman who is the mother-in-law of a corrections officer, according to court papers.

The interpreter spoke to Dyshko over the phone and asked her about her health and whether she was suicidal, and reported that Dyshko wanted to kill herself.

Dyshko was placed on suicide precautions. She voluntarily removed her clothing and was given a quilted gown to wear, which she maintains didn’t stay fastened.

She spent the weekend in jail, but was allowed to make phone calls to relatives and the Ukrainian Embassy, according to court papers.

COUNTY SEEKS DISMISSAL

The county asked U.S. District Court Judge John R. Adams to dismiss the case, saying Dyshko’s constitutional rights were not violated.

Procedures exist for communicating with Spanish-speaking inmates, but Dyshko was the first Ukrainian-speaking inmate encountered by the jail, and there was no reason to believe the interpretation was incorrect, the county argued.

In his ruling, Adams said a jury could reasonably conclude that Dyshko’s rights were violated and should hear the case.

He noted that, according to a translation of Dyshko’s comments at the jail by a different interpreter hired by the county for this case, Dyshko actually said, “Why would I want to die? I want to go to my kids.”

“A reasonable jury could conclude that this entire circumstance could have been avoided if a policy existed within the jail for attempting to obtain foreign language interpreters when the need arose,” Adams wrote.

Referring to the sheriff’s deposition, the judge took aim at what he called Swanson’s “declaration that the occasional foreign-language speaker resembles a space alien whose existence in Stark County does not require his attention or the promulgation of a policy.”

Dyshko’s attorneys also represent Hope Steffey, a Salem woman who is suing the jail over its use of suicide precautions. That case is pending before another judge in federal court.

A nice Saturday Night Live skit might be several Stark County Sheriff's officers standing around and a woman comes in and says, "Officers, the bank across the street is being robbed!"

You get the idea. There was no faulty translation. Somehow a dysfunctional predilection to stripping women has evolved in the Stark County Sheriff's office.

Steffey's lawsuits against the jail contractors, nor the deputies suit against the news station will EVER go to a trial.

If they did all these criminals would be in jail, where they belong.

Heres my comment, which I never expect them to print:

As some of you know I have been looking into the Hope Steffey Case for over a year.
I have posted links to prove that the Stark County police lied about this case, using their own reports.
I know you have seen some of this before, but the part I don't get is WHY all the rest of the people that “investigated” this helped to cover this up this obvious case of abuse by the police.

A news paper the CantonRep deliberately wrote up a misleading article about this. They put stuff in the article that they KNEW were lies.
As an example they put in their ‘Award winning’ story ‘What Happened To Hope Steffey’ that Swanson had claimed that Steffey had been given a chance to remove her clothes and had refused.
This statement is TRUE, this IS what the sheriff claimed.
BUT the BCI investigation was VERY clear that she had NOT been given a chance to remove her clothes, and the CantonRep KNEW this. And I know they knew this because the author is the one that pointed me to the information!! And they acknowledged the source in the article.

So the paper printed a LIE from the sheriff that they KNEW was a lie....WHY!??!?

A couple of other things NEVER reported in the news is that Steffey's assailant was arrested the month before, for another assault. And the cops knew this, because they are on tape discussing it.
And another thing never reported in ANY news source is that Steffey was not just arrested for disorderly conduct & resisting, but also for the assault that she had reported!!
But yet Richard T. Gurlea Jr., testified at Steffey's trial, under oath, that the 'investigation' into the assault was never finished.
REALLY?!!? Then how do you explain the assault charges against Steffey???

BTW his excuse for not finishing the investigation was that Steffey was in no shape to help with the investigation. So I guess any crime victims that are unconscious or dead have NO chance of having their cases investigated by the Stark County Sheriff's Dept. (All their excuses are just as lame as this one, or even worse.)

But the point is WHY was there no news source that made any of this public??
Even the original TV WKYC report never even made mention of this.
How can you skip over info that shows the cops were trying to frame the crime victim?!?!?

Makes me question every newspaper article....how many others leave out facts that they KNOW are out there, and would change the whole look of the case, but are never made public??

The Lozada video is chilling and horrible.

Each of these following cases of police abuse are:

Oscar Grant -- executed in Oakland
Angela Garbarino -- face bashed in
Brian Sterner -- tossed out of his wheelchair, he's quadriplegic!
Sean Bell -- shot 50 times by cops
Greg Williams -- double amputee tasered out of his wheelchair

I'm assuming you have heard of each of these cases if you have not followed them.

I have a special Google News section set up that shares "police abuse" stories with me. Very handy if you want to follow it as it's happening.

Every so often I also search up in the Google News area police abuse settlement (no quotes) -- the results of this search show the millions of dollars that cities (tax payers) are losing because of these out of control thugs that get hired.

"We need to get the laws changed, but my Reps so far are just sending me the same old form letters."

John, it is already against the law for these thugs to act this way. We have enough laws. What we need is for departments to fire these thugs when they are caught and to offer better training and screening to of the new thugs that get hired.

I think we need to get other people feeling as outraged and disgusted as we feel about the Hope Steffey case and all the rest of these horrible cases.

I think we need to track all of these case, and the ones to come, and write letters to the editors of papers showing that these cases are not isolated. There is a gross pattern of abuse here. Is it guided, conscious and intentional? I don't know. I know the conspiracy buffs would wonder if we are being softened up for martial law or simply being invited to forget what freedoms the Bill of Rights protects.

All I can say is that I am glad you are on the case, cataloging these incedents via youtube. I would love to see you take this conversation even more public. Would it help to set up another website about the erosion of our civil liberties or one specifically about police abuse?

For my part I will keep this list in the hope that when other people search two of the names together in a single search, at least that searcher will understand that these cases are not isolated.

Has there been any word about how much money Stark County had to pay out to Hope Steffey?

Even though justice was not served in that settlement, it at least let the county board of supervisors know that allowing these rogue sheriff's to exist can cost the county a lot of money.

FARGO, N.D. — Authorities said a Stark County sheriff’s deputy was arrested with his mother after the deputy vomited on people at a Kenny Chesney concert in Fargo and refused to leave. Police Sgt. Mark Lykken said 26-year-old Justin Krohmer and his mother, Susan, whose husband is the Ada, Minn., police chief, were jailed on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting or obstructing an officer.

Lykken said Justin Krohmer was asked to leave the Fargodome about 11 p.m. Saturday after vomiting on people in front of him, but he refused to do so. Lykken said 47-year-old Susan Krohmer pushed police officers.

Susan Krohmer is the wife of Ada Police Chief Wade Krohmer. Their listed phone number was disconnected and a message left at Wade Krohmer’s office was not returned.

Well, ain't that the truth.

Rense.com links to articles relating to "the police state" and "police brutality" which seems to be the area where we connect. Please pardon that Rense also links to horrible and ugly racist and paranoid ravings as well. There is much there to take with less than a a grain of salt.

Nothing new here, simply that it is an echo of a case that really was too shocking to be forgotten.

Hey! When things are too shocking to be forgotten, like Pearl Harbor Day, the anniversary of the event is often remembered.

I don't know the date of the top of my head but I do think that you and I are likely the only people even considering some kind of yearly observance of this abuse.

Something like this will remind police everywhere that the rights of the people, the rights of women, the rights of our sisters and mothers, will not be abused without consequences.
